On the way to Mundy Park, we found several Akebonos grown very well in private residences, and Pendula/Beni-Shidare too. One white full-blooming weeping tree that we are not sure, so we need your help to know it's ID. Thank you. Mayling & Willy

    Reported date: April 12, 2008

    Akebonos:
    1. Location: At #397 Mundy Street. According to the landload, these two are nine years old. 50% blooming

Of the two weeping pendula trees in the previous post, I think we're calling the first Beni-shidare, and the second one Yae-beni-shidare, the "Yae" indicating double blossoms.

That's not a 'Snofozam', it's the same light pink, turning white P. pendula form shown on another thread. 'Snofozam' opens white and has shorter, darker reddish flower stalks that contrast with the whiteness of the flowers. It also has vertically pendulous side branches.

Can you say "lost"? If you're not from around Vancouver, you wouldn't understand how not on the route to the West End from New Westminster is Como Lake in Coquitlam. It took me a while to understand it. But it gave me a chance to go back in time a bit to when there were flowers on the Kanzans and Shirofugens still had white flowers.

Well, not this Shirofugen. This is such nice looking tree, but I didn't convince myself it was a Shirofugen until I looked at the photos.
    20080517_ComoLake_Shirofugen_Cutler_6578r.jpg 20080517_ComoLake_Shirofugen_Cutler_6584r.jpg 20080517_ComoLake_Shirofugen_Cutler_6581r.jpg 20080517_ComoLake_Shirofugen_Cutler_6582r.jpg

The Amanogawa is in a nice private planting. And I thought this was an outstanding looking Kanzan. These are sort-of north of the golf course, on Sprice, which is off Foster.
    20080517_Sprice_Amanogawa_Cutler_6585r.jpg 20080517_Sprice_Kanzan_Cutler_6586r.jpg

This is the Shirofugen on Foster that took me back in time. At least I think it's Shirofugen - it's so white I could mix it up with Shogetsu, except the petal edges aren't all that fringed. Across Foster north of the golf course. [Edited May 20 by wcutler: now I think it's more likely Shogetsu (and that's why the white flowers), partly because of Ron's comments elsewhere about Shogetsu and Pink Perfection having a similar shape. The blossom edges still don't seem fringed enough, though, particularly in that last photo (see a blossom comparison in the Cultivars ID forum). Shogetsu leaves are supposed to be green like that, but Shirofugen's leaves turn green and I've seen them very green even when the blossoms were white, but that was under cover. ]

On a walk last Saturday on the Riverview Hospital grounds, we saw the following cherries:

Two Pendulas, across the road from one another:

    20090418_RiverviewCoquitlam_Pendula_Blumenthal_855.jpg 20090418_RiverviewCoquitlam_Pendula_Blumenthal_856.jpg

Another Pendula, this one a Yae-beni-shidare:

    20090418_RiverviewCoquitlam_YaeBeniShidare_Blumenthal_882.jpg 20090418_RiverviewCoquitlam_YaeBeniShidare_Blumenthal_883.jpg

An unidentified single white blossomed cherry, which was quite spectacular:

    20090418_RiverviewCoquitlam_Blumenthal_890.jpg 20090418_RiverviewCoquitlam_Blumenthal_891.jpg

And several of these large, not-yet bloomed cherries, which are probably Kanzans:

Stunning 'Ukon' in bloom now at the corner of Guildford and Pacific - unfortunately I only had my phone with me today, but you get the idea:

Much clearer, Laura. I can see the double blossoms, red bud scales, and the last photo of the tree is especially less white. It is Ukon.

Funny - I was sure you were going to say something else - there's really not much yellow to see.

These blossoms are on Runnel Drive in Coquitlam. They run along the street behind the restaurants. At the far end there are smaller ones that are weeping with darker pink blossoms.

Can anyone tell me what kind of cherry blossoms these ones are? I love them :-)

These are 'Akebono' cherries. They're on the map now. Thanks for posting them here and putting the marker on the map!

If you want to reply here with photos of the darker pink weeping ones, we'll tell you what those are too.

Looks like 'Beni-shidare' in these pictures. Was it really pure white in bloom?

Oh I'm not sure, It was whitish...I trusted the riverview inventory that said it was this cultivar. But we know there's a lot of mistakes in it....

Thanks, Douglas. I think it's the same tree as the first one in posting #6, isn't it? So it would be 'Beni-shidare'. But what got me out of bed was remembering that I didn't know what to call a white one that Laura posted, and that's the one in the third grouping in that posting. Can that one be 'Snofozam'? I thought we had a discussion about whether 'Snofozam' could be that old, but I'm not up to looking for it right now.

Very mature and interesting cherry at Mariner Way north of Spuraway Ave (Parking). We didn't stop. It could be Tai-haku.
    Just for next year.

Funny. Jon Pernul, who lives out that way, just put a marker on our map at that location, with a link to this photo that he took on April 1. He also did not have closeup photos of the flowers, said he would try to get some in the next few days. Maybe they will help, or maybe we'll wait till next year. It looks like there are two different types of cherry in that row?
