Some species of the Armillaria mellea aggregate (this time, a true Armillaria and not a Floccularia or a Tricholoma...).

    Cheers, Harri Harmaja

Looks like an A. mellea to me, although I rarely (if ever???) find them growing singly.

What does "aggregate" mean in this context?

So, A. mellea it is. I took some more photos today of what I thought was this more mature specimens of this species...now I'm not so sure. The stalk at the base is not dark in the new photos.

    Armillaria is quite variable, hunh?

I think there was an extensive survey of the PNW last decade or so that decided upon 20 or so different species. That's why we have the "Ostoyae complex"...

I just call em all "honeys" and move on. They can be so prolific... Rather tough for my tastes, although i did once eat some Armillaria Tabescens from Oak in the midwest that were perfectly tasty and ... crisp.

Very variable complex. We always stress that this is not a beginners mushroom.
