    Re: acer palmatum Taimin nishiki

Good looking tree! I'm impressed with how purple the foliage still is in July. My purple ghost for example is a blend of new purple leaves and some odd green leaves. (oddly fascinating in some way).

What kind of spot do you have it in? How much water & sun does it get?

I bought a Taimin Nishiki, five years ago, from the same supplier. The variegation lasted one season only. It is now a nice dwarf red maple.

    Gomero,
Have you tried cutting it back hard. I find alot of variegations do better when cut back hard.

Since i have been playing around with Bonsai, i have noticed that my trident "Goshiki Kaede' exhibits great variegation when cut back hard before leaf out in spring. If i let it grow on, the variegations get less pronounced.

That's what I do with my 'Fujinami nishiki', I cut back hard the non variegated branches and seems to work so far. With the 'Taimin nishiki' the variegation disappeared completely when it leafed out the second season.

The leaves are just opening up. This one is new to me so I do not know what to expect.

Where were you able to get yours? This is a cultivar I'm really wanting to add to my collection.

the correct method of prune (for my experience) is after the sprout remove the branch that haven't variegation leaves ..if prune before is possible we remove the only branch with variegations ...maplesan sorry i not know one USA source with this maple in stock

I have two of them currently but they are too big to ship. I have had them one year and am not too impressed. I think it is a tree which can have nice color in a very small size. I think Ap "Rainbow" is closer to the pink red combination but it too does not have even colorin in the larger trees.

Here is some photos of Ap "Rainbow". The photos are a bit blurry but you can see some of the nice pink/red coloration. I asked about getting one and the comment was they are still not ready. You can see that some branches have the varigation and some do not.

7th June 2023 and as I mentioned on the Rainbow thread about the similarities with Taimin nishiki. I thought I would post a couple of photos of my Rainbow here from this afternoon. It might help members to not double up. Tempted to put both on the synonym or similar to thread tbh and especially as Charlie @amazingmaples also mentioned Rainbow on this thread.
