Good morning, well it's very mild once again here and although not the best Autumnal colours this year as Emery pointed out, I do have a few that looked quite nice at daybreak today. They are:- Sawa Chidori, Ki Hachijo x2 , Japanese Sunrise, Karusa Gawa, Inaba shidare, Atropurpureum, Aconitifolium, Nigrum, and Orangeola. D
Our oldest japanese maple, a bloodgood, is completely shaded by the canadian maple to the east and the walnut tree to the west of it. All summer it is mostly green foilage due to lack of sun. Finally in late fall it faithfully turns to its autumn coat. Believe it or not, the bloodgood is older then the canuck maple. The bloodgood is approx 20' tall ( 5 1/2 Metres). The smaller japanese maple on the left is the beni kawa showing its colours. The canadian maple is not showing the top 10'-15' in the photo
Acer japonicum 'Vitifolium', always a classic. I have a new camera (well telephone)! This wasn't it. I don't really know how to use it yet, although it seems like it will be a big improvement for macro and low light.
Gorgeous Emery..the colour and form is outstanding. I have a Vitifolium and Meigetsu in pots..I bought them as circa 4 year old trees and I’ve had them for 4 years..at least 4 summers..they are very slow growers for me..leaf perfect but blimey they can’t be more than 28” tall..nice form coming on..ive potted them on in that time..Compare these cultivars to say Moonrise that must have got to 6foot in the same time period..I am interested to know if you and anyone else has experienced the same.
When you can start seeing pots on my former patio you know they are dropping fast! 2 photos of Asahi zuru, Red Pygmy
We wait and we wait and all to soon the colours come and go all too quickly. But thankfully those moments can be saved and shared here. Very nice R D
Really didn't expect First Ghost to be such a lovely colour in autumn, I thought it was just a spring displayer. Liking the new multi picture upload feature by the way.
These do you mean Alain ? Cryptomeria japonica sekkan sugi..note the ball shaped cones in the last photo..the other one is something similiar..Japanese conifers.. Also just for you I took a photo of your favourite haha I don’t get the lanterns you previously spoke of..I can never remember the name of this tree koral..something?
Cryptomeria, OK. Hard to keep in a pot where I live, it's too dry and most of the bottom branches dry out (a bit like potted Sequoiadendron). Koelreuteria paniculata : "Common names include goldenrain tree,[3][4] pride of India,[5] China tree,[6] and the varnish tree.[4]" (Wikipedia) Here, it's called "savonnier", from "savon", soap. Don't ask me why ;-) Here is mine, now about 6metres + tall, at local time 17:20 : I try to prune it hard every year, leaving one or two sets of buds on the year's growth. Here it was in 2013 :
It's hard to take good photos when it's sunny, too much contrast. Though I've had my camera for years, I haven't found the right settings yet. What I can see when I come back from shopping : The red one is Acer griseum, the other potted ones are shir. 'Autumn Moon' and palm. 'Emerald Lace'. The green one next to the Prunus pissardii is Acer palmatum palmatum, one of the very few that are not potted.
Funny enough a few of the bottom branches on mine went Brown..the rest looks very healthy.. I quite like them. Thanks for the reminder and info re savonnier.. I always forget that one..mines about 3.5n now..I will have to prune it!!! Very nice photos in your other post above :)
I read about Koelreuteria paniculata following your post above..strange mine doesn’t flower nor the lanterns you speak of..I also read it’s invasive as you hand suggested. I’ve had mine for 4 years growing well and great foliage..I wonder why I don’t get flowers or lanterns..
Last year my smaller 'Hubbs Red Willow' was late to begin to show any colors and the frost stripped the tree before a show. This year the small one is way ahead of the other one though still aways from final color.
Shishigashira and Osakazuki Oriental Mystery and some kind of regular green dissectum Two shots of Seiryu showing different colours on different parts of the tree. This tree was repotted and moved this year and the upper foliage exposed to more sun has had an attractive red edging all summer, and this section is now a vibrant red. Lower down there are more orange to pink tones:
Wow! That 'Shigitatsu sawa' is gorgeous. Ours gets a little color and then gives up early. Interesting how they change at different times: I was looking at our 'Shishigashira' while photographing 'Mirte' with my new phone/camera, ours is still that very dark green. I slipped a Shishi pic in, and you can see it in the last pic into the sun, on the left.
'Shigitatsu sawa' does not always do that well here in autumn, often giving up after a brief and relatively limp display, but we seem to have found an ideal place for it. It has more orange/red in the colour this year than normal. As for the 'Shisgigashira' this only started to turn in the last few days and is still dark green on lower and inner portions. It has been a little windy here and some of the ones that put on an a good early show have lost all leaves. Your 'Mirte' looks very nice and hopefully that magnificent 'Shishigashira' will have time to put on a display for you!
I hope so, it doesn't do it every year, but it is spectacular when it happens. I was collecting some A. sieboldianum seed for people, and our new kitten Tasha decided to help. She's very social, and also removed some dead branches that were too high for me to bother with! Here is a nice seedling I planted this year. It looks to have a mounding habit, and is very light, almost cream, in spring, before turning a light green and then scarlet. There is a red leaved companion with similar leaf and habit that I planted next to it. And another sieboldianum, 'Shoryu no tsume', planted last year and not really established yet: These are with my old camera still.
I remember my high-school days when our teacher told us all 3-colour cats are pussies. I can't remember how the genetics work to come to this conclusion though...
Most of my trees are just starting to colour up. Pictures are: Red feather, Aconitifolium, Blueberry bush, Sango Kaku, Indium summer, Cornus kousa Venus, Red dragon, Sorbus Dodong.
Almost all my trees have shed, or are shedding their leaves now, except a palmatum in the ground and a few others. These 6 seedlings are from the same tree, I don't remember which one. Funny to see how different their colours are :
