    Hi there,

Has anyone ever added cotton to their compost pile? I was thinking that old 100% cotton clothes that are too worn to donate could be added to the compost pile, thereby avoiding filling the landfill. If you think of all the cotton that gets tossed daily across North America, I'm sure composting some of it would make a difference!

    Thanks for any feedback!

Apart from other uses mentioned, I'd suspect the dyes used in most cotton garments are not biodegradable; some could even be toxic to composting micro-organisms. Ditto buttons, collar stifteners, elastic, etc. If you're going to try composting, remove those first.

i have found cotton clothing buried in the ground here on an old farm. partly rotted but not much. no saying how long it had been there but more than 5 years for sure before i dug up that area for gardening.

Interesting, but I am thinking that it would break down faster in a composter.
