As I drive around in my city and am always impressed with all of the great old japanese maple trees I see. I thought it would be fun and good to show them and to have others show the great old trees in their neighborhoods.
it was hard to pick from all the shots i took this morning. Look at the thread for Seiryu, I posted photos of a Seiryu I found in one yard. The size of these trees still blows me away.
Thanks for all the wonderful pictures, Charlie. The Shaina and some of the mounding dissectums are beautiful to behold. It is a joy to see these majestic beauties of good age and allowed to spread out in the ground to their natural dimensions. Thanks again.
I was driving around and took more photos. I really like the looks of the tree on 32nd, it has great branching The tree on Ashworth is at least 50' wide. The one on Howe looked like and upright out of the corner of my eye but then I looked again and noticed it was a dissectum, a very big dissectum.
Perfect place to post some unique maples in Alexander City, AL. The first one is 30 years old and the homeowner planted as a grafted red maple and he said he cut off an unusual side branch when first planted and it came out green the next year. He probably cut off the red grafted maple and this is the rootstock that came out. He got the better end of the deal. the homeowner also says he has never pruned it either. It just has this natural mushroom shape and is very very thick. I am in the picture for scale and I am 6 feet tall. Justin
The homeowner is unsure of how old this maple is as it was part of the landscape when he bought the home 6 years ago. Either way, this is likley the largest and oldest maple I have seen in person. The maple is in Alexander City, AL and leaves and light red/purple when they first come out. Maybe someone may have some insight as to which cultivar if any this one is. This maple has amazing sidebranching and root structure. I am in the picture for scale and I am 6 feet tall. Enjoy. Justin
