my friend dropped this off a month ago, and I have NO clue what it is!
Other than a rather bad case of scales (i think), can anyone help me with the id / maintenance of this guy?

He's also grown an offset (again, not sure) at the bottom, and continues to sprout up top.
I'm worried that the alcohol & water treatment I am using to treat the scales are harming it, more than helping.

    Austrocylindropuntia subulata.

Alcohol should not damage the cactus. I often use 50% ethanol or isopropanol to treat plants, the tougher cacti even withstand pure alcohol.

Ah, so it IS a cactus, cool!
Glad to hear that the alcohol isnt harming it..... doesn't seem like it is helping much, either though. How long should i keep up the treatments before an improvement is seen?

king- are those pups, or tentacles??
