Hi, I'm aiming to air layer my japanese maple bloodgood but I don't know if I can get any sphagnum moss. Are there any other rooting mediums which I could use?

shredded coconut husk...pearlite, probably pink fiberglass insulation fibers...seems the issue is cleanliness and a bit of air around the stem...any sterile stringy medium that will hold moisture.

sphagnum moss is normaly used because it resists rotting, since it will be closed up for a while and moist anything will work as long as you keep it from rotting. I have heard of cutting a slit in a plastic pot and tapeing it around the cut area and filling with soil, of course you need to moniter moisture more

But, doesnt every plantschool sell dried sphagnum moss blocks? Its like a small flat package that you put in water and then it swells to 10 times its size in a couple of minutes.
