The following was sent in via email:

On my way back to my office (in the Bay of Haifa, Israel) from lunch a colleague pointed out a palm tree which he said is unique.

In addition to the main trunk which goes straight up reaching a reasonable height for a palm tree it also has four shorter trunks all coming out of the base just like the main trunk.

I went over to the tree to take a closer look. The bark appears to be made of hundreds of small twigs as if they'd been glued on to the trunks of the tree. Also, protruding from the base of the tree was what looks like a branch completely covered with palm leaves.

I was wondering whether this is a rare - or maybe even a unique - phenomenon.

I believe you are describing a Rootspine Palm.

This could also be Cocothrinax sp. Palms don't have "bark," incidentally.
