My daughter "rescued" this succulent. Can anyone tell me a) what the name of it is, and b) what is the red on the stems? The main stem is all red, and this offshoot looks like the photo. Thanks, C.
Not sure what kind of succulent it is (I'm not good in that category). But, the red stuff is probably a type of pigment- an anthocyanin. That type of pigment may have many uses in the plant, but probably in this case it's used as a sunscreen (obviously, in this case- used to reflect red wavelegths of light).
Yes it does have a red stem. Actually the stem is beginning to turn woody. Its genuine Sedum adolphii. The related Sedum nussbaumerianum is often misidentified as Sedum adolphii in the trade but that species is more robust with longer and flatter yellowish leaves.
