I have been disappointed with the flavor of tomatoes I've grown in the past, esp. with plants suited for container growing, so I'm looking for suggestions. I grow only grow 2 or 3 plants, in large containers.
I grew a few 'Rutgers' tomatoes (from seed) in a large pot, which tasted pretty good. I used soil from the yard and mixed in a small amount of compost. Here's a relevant article: http://njfarmfresh.rutgers.edu/pdfs/Whatsinseason8-6-07.pdf
Hi, I have had good results in the past with large containers and various types of tomatoes. I find the best are cherry(Sunsugars) size and some of the intermediate sizes. I stay away from large tomatoes in containers, they just do not seem to grow well at all. I grow large tomatoes in the larger ground beds. Here is a photo of the containers.
I love Sweet 100's and Sweet million. These cherry tomatoes were my most successful tomatoes over the last couple years that I have been growing tomatoes in containers. They are very sweet. Also, the plants are indeterminate, so the fruit doesn't ripen all at the same time -- great for picking a few for a salad every few days.
