autumn colours

The red at the back is Okagami
The 'orangey' one is Viridis in autumn splendour

Intense color. You sure you didn't use a can of spray paint? Heh heh
Are they consistant from year to year?

 

Some years they can dissapoint, and they are not always colouring at the same time
As an example, this is a pic of the same area some years ago. You will notice the difference in size of the Okagami, and the 'newness' of the Garnet (or maybe it is a Crimson Queen?)

 

This is the same picture two weeks later. You will note that 'Waterfall' at the back is now yellow, and Crimson Queen is taking on its autumn colour
This time of year it is quite amazing how quickly the colours change
Today the leaves have all gone with the exception of Okagami which is a stunning scarlet :)

 

Good Color in AL

Here are some pics that I made during the half-time of the Iron Bowl. Pictured is Acer palmatum dissectum 'Edgewood's Golden'. Fairly uncommon and a great laceleaf. Colored up beautifully this fall. The same maple placed in front of an Acer japonicum 'O isame', a great color combo and an Acer palmatum 'Omure yama' that I am still staking.

 

Are those pics taken with 'flash'?
The Omurayama looks great .. I have a new one this past year. They usually take a few years to settle in and develop a root system before the 'take off'

It was overcast and gloomy, with darkness beginning to set in. I got this tree from Harold Johnston in 1996 as a small 1g plant. It has been in the ground about 6 years and now has about a 2" caliper. Others that I have seen in pots seem to sprawl. Another grower that I know says that she just lets hers grow as they please. I have been training mine as a standard. It has been staked for years and is now staked mainly to train one branch. I hope to turn it loose soon. I think that this cultivar should be staked. Here are images of this tree from 9-30-01, 4-29-04 and a closeup of the top of the stake clearly showing a small branch taped to it at the top, taken 4-29-04.

Colors on 11-19-04

Here are some shots made late in the rainey afternoon of 11-19-04. Acer japonicum 'O isame', Acer truncatum leaves and a small Acer palmatum dissectum 'Watnong'.
