We are looking for drought resistant plants for hanging baskets, trees for containers, and fast growing trees. As far as the trees go, native would be preferable. Any and ALL help would be helpful, and appreciated. A group of us are trying to "green up" our little burg (Eureka Springs Arkansas). It is a tourist mountain village, and buildable space (Not totally vertical) is at a premium, consiquently, the buildings are close, and the limestone walks have not left as much green as we would like. Not at all familiar with this board (1st post) so if you want to e-mail direct, thats cool kriley@wildblue.net Thanks, Ken
Ashe Juniper Juniperus ashei (an Ozark speciality) would probably do OK in a (large!) container. It'll need well-drained soil.
Just curious - why the drought resistant plants for hanging baskets? Is that because they won't be regularly watered?
Ditto to Daniel's query. I've got a good list of plants for containers that don't need alot of water but they still need care. Please clarify what the natural conditions and maintenance is involved. Thanks.
Re: Your help appreciated, AND AGAIN, THANK YOU! The baskets will be getting waterd daily. The problem is that even using hydro-source gel in my personal baskets last year, most needed to be watered twice a day. They were cocoa lined, and contained Vinca major, angelwing begonias, Euphorbia, "wave" petunias, million bells, and trailing snapdragons. One more time thanks
Regarding the dried out baskets, I recall reading about a local city council who came up with the idea of hanging thick pieces of rope down from the hook that the basket hung on, right into the soil in the centre of the basket, through to the bottom of the container. The rope absorbed water on rainy days and slowly released water on sunny ones, so that they didn't have to be hand watered as often. Apparently it worked really well. Can't find the article though, sorry.
