I need help with this one. Yellow; composite; hairy (whitish) stem, slightly ribbed, 4 - 6 inches tall; narrow lance-like leaves, bottom and edges hairy, leaves seem to be entire (v finely toothed?), clasping, appears to be a monocot; solitary stalks, grows in clusters; pleasant dandelion smell. From exp I know they will seed within about 1 to 2 wks. Cannot find in my books. Some sort of dandelion? Hawkweed? Any help appreciated. Saranac Lake, NY, USA.
no such thing as too much description.... Not a dandilion (Taraxicum spp) but something in the same family, I'd bet. Although, since that's the Asteraceae, you've kind of got your work cut out for you. Sow thistle (Sonchus spp), maybe?
Agree with Coltsfoot Tussilago farfara. The small spring leaves mentioned in the description are on the flowering stem; the huge summer leaves, produced separately, only develop after the flowers are largely finished.
Hey, I thank all of you. I knew something looked familiar, yet off season, when I was looking this over. Coltsfoot it is! A "fool's leaf" got me. Bob
