I have oca and some other south american root crops but does anyone know a source for yacon? I love it and would like to try to grow up to an acre of it eventually. Help me please!
In case anyone is still looking ... Cultivariable lists both oca (Oxalis tuberosa) and yacon (Smallanthus sonchifolius).
Because they are not seeds that company cannot ship yacon to Canada. I see that they have some oca seeds though. Awesome. Thanks for posting.
would the Mayan garden plot out at UBC farm have what you are looking for? Near TRIUMF. http://ubcfarm.ubc.ca/community/indigenous-initiatives/
Good call, Georgia Strait. Didn't think to look close to home. Oca tubers have been available at the last two annual UBC plant sales. No yacon though. For more information on this event: A Growing Affair
the entire UBC farm property is a beautiful spot - i hope it stays that way - i need to go to UBC often - and although that part of the neighborhood has changed significantly (recently (ie pricey condos, stores, etc)) - the garden area is lovely. And very interesting for all of the different gardening (growing) cultures. I think it is a low key kind of place - and encourages all of us diverse Canadians to learn of many other heritages we have here in BC. Garden diplomacy!
Not blowing my own horn but I am the person who donated all the Oca to UBC. I sent off a big box full of it a few years ago. I am glad they are having fun with it. I have Yacon now. It is okay. Big plant so probably better in the ground. I will try eating some this fall. Easy to overwinter in a pot with dry soil. I treated it like Dalila tubers.
Hi, Arcadia, I m just wondering, do you still growing yacon? Could you sell me some yacon crowns or I can exchange some of my plants with you if you like. Hi, dare, do you still grown yacon? Can I buy one or a cup yacon crowns from you?
Hi Vicky zz, unfortunately I failed to keep yacon crowns 2 years ago. all died. I'm looking for them now. I may get some this year. when I get enough, I'll contact you.
Hi all, I have several yacon plants that I can trade. Preferably for Oca but I'm open to offers. The plants come from propagation bulbs from the plants last year. They are in soil and have already sprouted. Cheers, David
Hi dnumerow, Would you have some yacon and oca? I have been looking for both for quite a while. thanks.
