    Looks like an Amaryllis species.

    It's beautiful and I agree with Lorax, it looks like an amaryllis. Did the flower stalk come out of a large bulb? Do you have more photos of the flower, perhaps looking into it?

    My bad, but since the Hippeastrum was what I meant when I said it, I stand completely corrected. I shan't make the same mistake again.

    Common name: Amaryllis.
    Botanical name: Hippeastrum.

    Another example:

    Common name: Geranium.
    Botanical name: Pelargonium.

    In both instances there is a similar, related genus that has the same word for its botanical name as the common name of the above plant. In the first case there is the related Amaryllis belladonna, in the second the hardy or crane's-bill geraniums (Geranium spp.).

    And I've resolved not to use common names in the past, but it's far easier to remember them when you're dealing with as many species as I am.

    May I remind you sir that a thneed is a product produced by murdering truffula trees.
