Has your weather been unusual? Sounds like a root rot of some kind, usually from poor drainage.

What are some of the types of plants affected, and are some other types close by unaffected by any chance?

Might also be weevils if you have them in your area. They are a matte black or brown beetle with an extended snout that usually eat leaves at night, leaving distinctive u-shaped notches in the leaves. Their larvae are creamy-white c-shaped grubs with brown heads; sometimes you also see their legs beginning to emerge, and the larvae eat roots. You'd have to dig and scratch through the soil to find those, but there would also likely be leaf damage as a diagnostic aid.
