Working granular fertilizer into the soil . . .

. . . . does it really matter or is it going to be just as effective scattered on the surface of the garden.

I hesitate to do much cultivating around shallow rooted vegetables like onions and corn so I usually just sprinkle the granular fertilizer around and then water it in well.
