We have two mature pear trees, one appears to be Bartlett, the other must be a winter pear of some sort. Can anyone tell me when the winter pear should be harvested and how they are eaten? This is our third season with the tree and I have tried various ways of harvesting and ripening and none have been successful. We have not yet had a heavy frost yet (BC Interior) but it could come any day and the fruit is falling and being enjoyed by the squirrels. Thanks for any information.

May need to be picked green and matured in cold storage.

Ron is correct. As you do not know what variety of pear you have, you are calliing them winter pears it is hard to give advice. However, normally if pears are already falling off the tree it might be too late to harvest. Normally, pears are harvested when the fruit begins to turn yellow. Pears "ripen" in storage. You should pick them quickly.
