I planted two windmill palm tree's In a raised bed one foot deep by thirty six inches across. Will the windmill's root system do o.k. growing in a raised bed?

Yes. Although a deeper container would have been better. Many people plant them in large pots. Some of them are on wheels/castors so the palm can be moved into a protected area in the winter. Just make sure they are well drained. Don't break off the center frond or the tree will die.

If you are going to try and keep them outdoors in raised planters through Yakima winters you may have to attach insulation or take other measures. Is anyone else growing this species there? I would wonder about the summer conditions also. Maybe someplace like the Yakima Area Arboretum, with its extensive irrigated lawns might be adequate.

Yes there are three windmill palm trees in the front of a Yakima restaurant. They are planted in the ground and the restaurant does nothing special for our winters such as mulch at the base or burlap around the trunk and they have survived. They have been there for about five to eight years and are about five feet tall. You had a question about our summers?
