These Dappled Willows in tree fom are planted at the entrance of my house. When we moved in we noticed that the trunk was "splitting" in the middle. I am not sure it the trees have been like this for a while but I am a little concern because I don't want to lose these trees. I took the pictures to a nursery and one of the persons working there told me that I would be very lucky if the one on the left survived. The one on the right according to him, was already healed. Do you think I will lose this tree? I see new growth in the branches and it doesn't look like it is dying but I am not sure how it will come back after the winter. Any thoughts as to what the problem could be? Will I need to replace it? Thanks.
Here these seem to be grafted pretty consistently on French pink pussy willow (probably a hybrid between Salix caprea and S. cinerea), possibly this kind is not hardy where you are and is splitting open during the winter. If this the case you will have to wrap the trunks each year to prevent further damage.
Thanks for the feedback. The trees had been here for at least three years and I see people have these in their backyards quite often. I wish I knew the condition of these trees last year or 2 years ago. I guess it will be a wait and see kind of game. What should I wrap it with?
