A quick question to anyone who thinks they know a thing or two about growing wildflowers. Several summers ago I noticed someone had thrown a packet or two of wildflower seeds on a sunny, rocky bank, in a stretch of Vancouver's sea wall where it was still under construction (beneath what is now the new Arthur Erickson waterfront condominium). It looked very beautiful, and the following summer the perennials and biennials came out too.

I would love to believe I can go and buy a swath of wildflower packets and throw them in sunny, weedless spots around the city and expect at least some of them to grow. I realize this seems unlikely. Does anyone know if there this patch of land might have had other natural characteristics that made it ideal for growing wildflowers without maintenance, and why? If I thought there were kinds of terrain to look out for where the seeds might take it might be fun to try it out.

    Thanks!

I have them in a few pots in the yard. Those flowers are basically weeds (pretty none the less), once you plant them, they will last for years. They do not need special care and are very hardy plants.

I would not plant them anywhere where you want to grow edible crops because I suspect that they will take over and be very hard to exterminate.
