Can anyone identify this plant? It was blooming in August on an old overgrown logging road. It is abour 45 cm tall, growing upright, and the flower is about 2 cm across. Sorry for the poor quality photo.

Euphrasia (Eyebright). Over 150-450 species in the genus, not easy to pin down to species.

There are numerous species of eyebright indeed and some of them are extremely difficult to tell apart on a photograph but there is not much of a choice near Nanaimo. Only two Euphrasia species are mentioned in the "Illustrated Flora of British Columbia". And it appears to me that only one of them, eastern eyebright [Euphrasia nemorosa (Pers.) Wallr.] is a good match for the habitat, the area where it was found, possibly even the shiny leaves that might show that they are not very hairy and the color of the flowers. I am somewhat worried, however, that "Euphrasia nemorosa" from B. C. looks so entirely different from what I can find under this name in my books about the German and Swiss flora.

Thank you, Mr. Flogaus-Faust. I believe you are right. This plant looks like the pictures that I see on the Internet. I am amazed and grateful that you are able to identify it for me.
