When looking for new places to photograph locally, I always visit John Harvey's site - he's very diligent about writing where and when he's been someplace in the province, and often takes more than a few wildflower / wildlife photographs when he's been there. Consult the Southern Gulf Islands section. I'd be interested in any replies to your original question as well, though - it'd be handy to know where might be a good place to explore.
