In the last couple of weeks as spring is emerginging I have noticed in my yard (and many other yards) wild purple flowers that are taking over the grass. Even my neighbors with virtualy weed free yards are having the same problem. These flowers are spotted all around my back yard and one spot is probably 20' x 20'. How can I get rid of these without harming the grass. Thanks, Reggie

Take a photo and get it identified first in the Plant ID forum.

i am from the south too and i bet it is purple henbit or purple dead nettle. it is a cool season weed. you can prevent it by applying a pre-emerge that is labeled for controllng it in September or October. If you want to get rid of it now, spray a post emerge for broad leaf weeds, something with 2-4D. You can get several products at any Lowe's, Home Depot etc. Get it while it is still flowering and before it sets seed.
