I think these are the same berries I use to eat when I was a child. My grandparents said it was wild huckleberry. I've done searches trying to find wild huckleberry in Alabama with no luck. The western/mid western huckleberry looks similar but a lot larger. These berries do not grow in clusters. The two berries shown in the photo were the only two I found on the shrub. These shrubs look to be about 3-4 foot at the most. I live in the northwest part of Alabama, if that helps.
Does look like a Vaccinium. Look at account of the wild plants of your region, to see which Vacciniums occur there.
