Both plants that were attempted here at UBCBG died in the harsh winters we have had the past few years. The Garden does not generally go to extra measures to protect plants from weather, but the large tree at the front entrance (3 metres or so--this tree produced male and female cones) was wrapped last winter. It was removed this summer. Others who take special precaution to protect their plants may have had better luck. Perhaps if the trees could be planted when we return to the milder el niño weather pattern they would have a better chance of becoming established.
