Who knows what this is?

    I found this in my woods behind my home, it was the only one I found, I live in the midwest, in Illinois, do you know what it is? Please help.

    Wait for the blooms to open and then post another picture - it will be much easier to ID once we see the flowers.

    My knee-jerk reaction is some type of orchid, though....

    If the blooms open, as many orchids don't like to be disturbed, from what I recall.

    Possibly Liparis lilifolia.

    The photo is a good match to photograph 4, plate 86 in Luer's Native Orchirds of United States and Canada excluding Florida.

    Hard to say what it's rarity is in Illinois - in outlying states of its range (Minnesota, Alabama) it gets listed as rare, but that's no surprise when it can only be found in a small corner of the state. In Illinois, it can be found in suitable habitats throughout the state, or so it seems from the map in the book above.

    Next time there is only one maybe leave it there, unless the property is going to be developed.

    Thanks everyone, I think it was what you said, I would have left it alone if I knew it was kind of rare for the area. I just hope it lives, so far it looks fine, I'll cross my fingers.
