I'm a photographer and i need to know for a project i'm doing and i can't find information on either of these plants anywhere!! =( the first my grandma suggested was some sort of lilly but it has a white stem that attatches to the pedals which are white and purple very bizarre and the berries are the other i found them on a tree and all over the ground surrounding it. they are a pinkish red color, about the size of a cherry, and have odd volcano looking things on it's outer surface. (i have bigger images if anyone wants these for anything. they are, after all, beautifull little things!)
Re: White stemmed flower? & odd looking berries please help! 1. and 2. Look like Colchicum sp. Common name of C. autumnale is autumn crocus. http://images.google.com/images?q=c...1I7SUNA_en-GB&um=1&ie=UTF-8&sa=N&hl=en&tab=wi http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Colchicum 3. Look like the fruits from a Cornus, possibly Cornus capitata. http://images.google.com/images?hl=...q=cornus+capitata+fruits&sa=N&start=0&ndsp=18
oh my gollie olly goodness you have no idea how much i appreciate you right now!!! thanks again for taking the time to help me! i verified that they were indeed the plants you were talking about! it's very difficult to find these things if you don't know their names y'know? =)
Re: White stemmed flower? & odd looking berries please help! 3. Is definitely a Cornus. Cornus kousa, is praps more likely. http://images.google.com/imgres?img...n-gb:IE-SearchBox&rlz=1I7SUNA_en-GB&sa=N&um=1 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kousa_Dogwood
Re: White stemmed flower? & odd looking berries please help! Agree with Cornus kousa for #3. The fruit are edible, and can be very tasty.
Re: White stemmed flower? & odd looking berries please help! hmmm yeah i read up on them although i'm not sure if i'd eat them they look and would probably feel weird! are you sure they are tasty?.. darn.. i wanna try one now! i was afraid to try them at first... maybe i'll go back to where i found it and try it! woo! thankyou both. oh hey! do you think you could help me with these last two? i think they are both more common than the others the first i think is some sort of relative to a clover(you know 3 and four leaf clovers?) because of the designs on the leaves of the plant. the other i'm very sure it's some sort of chrysanthemum
Re: White stemmed flower? & odd looking berries please help! New pics. Yes, first is a clover.Trifolium. Possibly Trifolium pratense. Need more pics of leaves /plant to give proper id. http://images.google.com/images?q=t...1I7SUNA_en-GB&um=1&ie=UTF-8&sa=N&hl=en&tab=wi Second is Osteospermum.Possibly O. ecklonis. http://images.google.com/imgres?img...n-gb:IE-SearchBox&rlz=1I7SUNA_en-GB&sa=N&um=1
Re: White stemmed flower? & odd looking berries please help! dagnamnit.. i should've went with my first guess for the osteospermum because i found another flower like it that was purple but i thought that the center looked a little more like a chrysanthemum.. but alwell. mmkay! i uploaded another pic i hope it helps.
Yes, Cornus kousa fruit are definitely edible - if they weren't, I'd not be here now ;-) Where it is native in China, it is sold in markets and is in high demand. Quality varies a bit from plant to plant, some are a bit bland, but others have a really nice flavour. The outer skin can be a mite tough, it can be easier just to bite a hole in it and suck the juice out. Keep the pips and sow them to grow your own plants.
