I saw a small group of these in Cobble hill today and was so curious it brought me to this site. Thank you for the posts, it helped me understand. There is also a flower that I saw a month ago and have never seen it before. It was single and very beautiful. White with carnation like petals. Pink scattered in the centre region and a long stem. I will search and see what I come up with ;-)

That would be exceptionally late in the season, unless you mean you saw the foliage?

A white-flowering variety of hardy cyclamen -- not native, so it looks like it has naturalized in the area.
