Hey! I'm stumped on this one. I found it on top of a mountain close to Summerland in the Okanagan at the end of August. Any ideas? John
Re: Okanagan - grass with pink flowers Looks like Stephanomeria virgata -- sometimes called "twiggy wreath plant" or "rod wirelettuce" -- it isn't a grass, but sort of appears that way sometimes.
Re: Okanagan - grass with pink flowers I agree with the Genus, but I'm not sure about Stephanomeria virgata. USDA: http://plants.usda.gov/java/profile?symbol=STVI2 Looks different and probably doesn't live here. I'm thinking Stephanomeria exigua (http://plants.usda.gov/java/profile?symbol=STEX&photoID=stex_002_ahp.tif). Thanks! John
Re: Okanagan - grass with pink flowers Stephanomeria tenuifolia is the only species in BC according to 'Flora of North America'
Re: Okanagan - grass with pink flowers It's listed in Wildflowers of the Pacific Northwest as Stephanomeria minor var. minor but the picture sure doesn't look like mine but it does mention the flowers can be pink. It also lists Stephanomeria paniculata as "grows in the same habitats". Pictures of Stephanomeria paniculata looks more my flower but I'm still guessing. It's always tough (for me) to know how much variation there is in a species.
