Recently used a trencher to dig a trench across my lawn. The attached plants grew in the soil thrown up by the trencher. They stand about 20 inches tall, have long white flowers with crimson/deep purple centres. They seem to bloom in early evening. After the blooms fall off, the spikey seed pod develops.

Can you help me identify the plant? I have lived on this property (Ottawa, Ontario) for more than 20 years and never have I seen this plant growing. I wonder how long the seeds had been buried?

    Thanks for any assistance,

    Randy
