Hi, I saw this unusual fungus (see attachment; I assume it's a fungus) whilst on holiday in Maine. This fungus was spotted beside a trail in Acadia National Park. The fungus was located in pine forest and occurred in clumps of several bells, as shown here. At the time, I took this photo so that I could try to identify the fungus but I have now realised what a challenge that is without expert help. I'm hoping this forum can help satisfy my curiosity?
Beautiful! Monotropa uniflora or Indian Pipe / Ghostflower. It is a plant but it does have an intimate/obligate relationship with fungi.
Brilliant! I wondered whether I was wrong in it being a plant but it looked such a strange waxy looking thing that I jumped to a conclusion. Thanks for solving my query.
We have them over here in Oregon too. Saw several of them last weekend at the Oregon coast, just emerging. Might show our grandson your photo next time he visits. Told him I did not have a picture, but would show him a photo.
>Saw several of them last weekend at the Oregon coast, just emerging< You were just emerging or the flowers were? Maybe you set up the tent in the dark and when you emerged in the morning, there they were. There's another species here that comes in yellow and reddish forms also.
