I am on Southern Vancouver Island, zone 8 and would like to plant a walnut tree. The local nursery has 3 possibilities : Carpathian, Franquette and Cook's Giant. I can't find much on the internet about these trees but am favoring the Cook's Giant. Can anyone suggest which I should plant and maybe tell me a bit about these ?? Thanks

One of each would be best, to ensure good pollination! If you get just one, and no-one else has any others nearby, you won't get many (if any) nuts.

Well that is bad news. I just barely have room for one tree so there is no way I can plant more.

From what I have read I thought they were self pollinating. Too bad.

Oregon State University provides an excellent guide to growing walnuts that might be helpful.
