My girlfriend has a large magnolia tree in her yard. They recently bought the house and have no idea what it is. The blooms are amazing white and almost the size of a dinner plate. Any ideas?
I believe it was in bloom in the spring early summer and im pretty sure its evergreen. I will go snap a picture today.
Magnolia grandiflora is very popular, planted just about anywhere it can be grown - that definitely includes where you are. Tell it by its thick, rigid evergreen leaves - like plastic.
Ordinarily this would be M. grandiflora. There are also a few hybrid selections around that resemble the M. grandiflora parent more than the M. virginiana parent, but unless and until seen to be otherwise plants looking like one shown can be assumed to be M. grandiflora. A close view might make it possible to recognize a particular named cultivar, although there have been many of these introduced and many specimens in gardens are unnamed seedlings anyway.
