I need to know specifically which Ivy can be planted in a forested area here in North Vancouver without concern. I know that in the Pacific Northwest some types of ivy have become an invasive problem to the woodland and urban landscape. I noticed recently that a few nurseries sell Ivy. I am not sure if I can trust local Nurseries that they would only sell types that are not invasive. I also would appreciate it if someone could refer me to a scientific paper or an article regarding this subject so I have something to back up my recommendation to only plant a specific type or not planting Ivy in this area at all. Your input is very much appreciated.

As far as I know, all ivies are invasive in the PNW . . . if you want to grow some, move to Europe where they're native (I think of them as excellent native plants, superb for attracting wildlife ;-)

In this case a sarcastic answer is just not helpful. I need more specific information because one of my customers “gardener” wants to plant a fair amount of Ivy on my customer’s forested property. I would like to give her some solid information, which outlines the potential consequences, explaining why we should not plant it here, as I cannot tell a customer what to do. I found already some articles from the USA describing the effort of time and money and the methods used in parks of Oregon and Washington to get rid of this plant. I was just hoping for some Canadian information. I have also noticed that a lot of Ivy plants are sold in nurseries here in Vancouver, which does not make sense to me. And by the way, I am originally from Europe.

Of course Portland has a serious ivy problem in its Forest Park. On a smaller scale, the Japanese Garden puts quite a lot of effort into controlling the stuff. http://www.noivyleague.com/

Perhaps it will help bolster your case if you mention to the client that UBC Botanical Garden is in the process of removing most, if not all, of its ivy species and cultivars as a preventative measure.
