Expected Iona would be very crowded in such a sunny sunday,
I went to Terra Nova instead. Very quiet birdwise. Too happy to
have a downy woodpecker pecking on a dead tree. While shooting,
noticed disc like things on the branches. Too bad they are on the
upper part of the tree, at least 25 feet up. However, my tele lens
could still get some usable images. Are these false turkey tails,
    Stereum ? hirsutum.

    Adorable bird :-)
Can't tell for sure but it kinda looks like a whitish poroid underside, so possibly one of the Trametes.

Growing on a birch. Does Piptoporus betulinus (syn. Fomitopsis betulina, Polyporus betulinus) occur in N America? That is the "default" bracket fungus on birch over here.

Hi Michael - it does occur here, though we see it more often a bit more inland BC, as we don't have much birch growing on the coast.
I'm thinking the size overall and the thin-ness of the "cap" portion would exclude F. betulina.

    Thanks all.
Just as I said, where woodpecker dares.
No way for me to climb and get a better shot.
