    Re: Acer palmatum 'Burgundy Lace'

    Hello there,
This year purchased a lovely Burgundy Lace that is several years old.
Just moved homes this summer and have watched the sun patterns in the new yard this summer.

Question: What to know where to plant my Burgundy Lace.
So Questions is What types of sun exposure best shows off your tree.
    Thanks

Sun will show Burgundy Lace off the best; however, too much sun can cause burned leaves hurting its appearance. Los Angeles is a place I am not familiar with; however, in Sonoma,California, japanese maples can get full sun as long as they do not get that hot afternoon sun.

Burgundy Lace will tolerate some sun, but in LA, you might need to protect it in the hottest part of the day, and certainly from winds.

So, your plant sould get sun most of the day for best color and be sheltered from any hot dry winds that will chew up the leaves. Burgundy Lace is very tolerant and even if the site is not ideal, it will probably do fine. A little drying at the leaf margins or some burning might be a reality for you, but the plant will still look great up until mid to late summer. In your area, the fall color will not be very good anyway, so the damaged leaves are not as big of a deal if you do not have the ideal planting site.

Should be easier to grow in Los Altos (Sunset Zone 15) than Los Angeles. See remarks on growing Japanese maples in California in plant encyclopedia portion of Sunset WESTERN GARDEN BOOK.
