Hi All, I'm trying to plant more native species this season and have been trying to find Haida and/or Tlingit potatoes. I've been on the hunt for a while know and they're hard to find at any stores/markets or are out of stock. Does anyone here grow either of the two or know where I could find them? Some background info in case anyone else is interested: Time for the Tlingit Potato | Hakai Magazine
I don't know where to find them, but thanks for the fascinating article. I'll look out for more info on this.
Perhaps you'll have better luck searching for Ozette potato. Apparently, Ozette, Haida, and Tlingit are one and the same. Note Cultivariable also has a related variety, Rozette: Haida Potatoes - The British Columbia Food History Network Inferred origin of several Native American potatoes from the Pacific Northwest and Southeast Alaska using SSR markers https://www.cultivariable.com/product/potato/potato-varieties/potato-ozette/ https://www.cultivariable.com/product/potato/potato-varieties/potato-rozette/ You may want to check with Eco-Sense as they had Ozette last year.
That was an awesome article. I too would like to source some of these potatoes, if anyone locates any! Happy to grow extra to share.
More information for those interested in heritage potatoes: Heritage potatoes | Heritage Potatoes - Canada. Ironwood Organics is cited as a Canadian source for various varieties, including Tlingit: Ironwood Organics.
Thanks for that...I have emailed them asking if they will have them in 2022 as they list the Tlingit as sold out. Those German Butterballs sound very tempting as well!
Those half sliced potatoes certainly look tasty. Too bad the heritage varieties are not readily available for purchase. I wonder if there are any local potato festivals.
While I recognize that cultivation expands the potential sites of where plants can be grown, it seems likelier to me that they had a direct Chiloe origin than the more circuitous Chiloe-via-Mexico. Temperate rainforest-inducing climate to temperate rainforest-inducing climate makes more sense than a stop off in the dry highlands or tropical rainforests of central Mexico along the way. I suppose it is possible (or even both could be), but... Attached are some photos of Chiloean nativars that are grown by the Huilliche-Mapuche peoples of Chiloe.
Home | Forstbauer Family Natural Food Farm (square.site) is at some of the farmers markets in Vancouver. They carry Sieglinde German Butter potatoes. From Product Search v1.0 (managemymarket.com), you can check what dates they will be at which markets.
Thanks All for the resources and extra info, glad to see there's wider interest in this too! I think I'll pre-order some Ozette tubers from Cultivariable for now.
Alas Cultivariable does not ship to Canada...is anyone in Canada growing the Ozette/Tlingit potatoes??
Thanks for that! I had never heard of Ironwood, will order from them next season. Their working email is : grow@ironwoodorganics.ca
Ok so we got some German Butterballs from Forstbauer Family Farms...they really are delicious! Intense, earthy potato flavour.
I am still trying to find a Canadian source for Tlingit/Ozette potatoes...anyone got any seed potatoes to share?
Oh I have tried, believe me...they do not respond to emails or messages. I did manage to find some this morning from lohbrunnercommunityfarm@gmail.com
I don't have time right now to browse through all the site mentionned in this thread but I'll sure come back in the next few days. Thanks for posting.
