    Hello all,

having recently moved to Vancouver I'm looking for a place (farmer, farm stand, market) where I can buy a bushel or two of excellent tomatoes. It is harvest season and I need to make a years worth of tomato sauce.

    Thanks for the input

You might like to trek down to Granville Island. It'd be expensive, but there is a tomato seller in the market who has some fairly uncommon varieties right now.

If you are going for bulk, I'm not sure what to recommend.

If you can find them Ashcroft tomatoes are the best for canning or just eating. I.G.A. had them a few weeks ago.

Hi gw...you probably know to look for paste/roma type tomatoes for sauce, rather than any of the slicer varieties.

These types are sold in farm markets and this is the best time to get "local" ones, with the weather in the interior about to turn for the worse! Price and quality should really be optimum right now.

We have several good outlets here in Surrey, our favorite being Two-EE's on Fraser Highway and about 164 St. I suspect there are some excellent produce stores right in Vancouver as well, those make more sense for you with the price of gas.

Supermarkets can do caselots sales also, but often seem to bring in stuff from far away, with the usual lack of ripeness. If they do have 'BC interior tomatoes', they could be competitive with the farm markets, and closer for you.
