We planted 25 Thuja Occidentalis "Smaragd" 4-5 ft trees in clay soil last spring. We are 25 miles from Niagara Falls, Ontario. They were planted in between 30+ year Silver maple trees that we prune every 10 years in order to create a privacy hedge. They are exposed to SW winds. We did not fertilize them and they looked great all summer and fall. We did not wrap them for the winter and now they are 90% brown. There is still some green on the tips. Are they dead or is there still a chance for them to survive. We have severly topped 2 of the maples in the hedge row so there will be lots of sunlight. Should we fertilize or are we putting good money after a hopless cause? How long should we give them before we yank them?
