Sorry this is such a newbie question... When can I stop watering fall-planted trees and shrubs? I'm in zone 5, and we had our first frost this morning. I assume I water until they are dormant, like when all the leaves fall off? We haven't been getting much rain at all, so I deep water weekly right now. Thanks!

Your watering sounds appropriate to me. You could probably discontinue the deep watering soon. I suggest that you water your newly planted trees and shrubs in the spring and summer when they look like they need it. They may be fine but dring the dryspell, the additional water will help them out.

The goal is to make sure the rootball (inside) is always moist. Not really "wet" but "moist".

Cut a small wooden dowel rod, sharpen, and push one or two into the ball.

You can pull them out and feel if they are moist.

If weather rains a lot, you may never need to water. There are times when so many weeks go by without rain, that a little water may be needed - not usual in the dormant season, but possible.
