This avocado tree was purchased in spring this year. It was re-potted in a larger pot with good potting soil and regular watering. Now the leaves look droopy and the trunk is black. How can I save this tree?

It looks like it's been overwatered. How moist is the soil when you stick a finger in?

The soil is moist but not soggy; it drains well. Does it need to dry out completely before watering again?

Yes. Avocados in-ground (which is where my experience with them is widest) tend to prefer the worst soils but fast drainage, and that means that the soil is completely dry before the next rain.
