I aquired a ladyslipper orchid - such a deep maroon that it sometimes looks black. Gorgeus! Do all the usual orchid rules apply for care and feeding? I have Phals and Dendrobiums but this one is new to me. Any suggestions for a more specific name?

You have a Paph (Paphiopedilum) of some type. They generally want to stay moister than then Dendrobiums, lower light conditions than Dendrobiums and finer bark mixture than both Phals & Dendrobiums.

The Orchid House on the University of Waterloo website gives good cultural notes on all types, including Paphs.

Can't offer any advice on the variety name though.

Thanks Simon, On your suggestion I did some more research and I am definitely not watering enough. Bought a water meter. I think I have a hybrid with no specific second name. Amazing how many varieties there are. I think I'll build a mini greenhouse for more control.
