Hi I have been growing Kale for the past 17 years quite successfully and sort of city dense one plant every 30cm. So most years I I switch out a lot of soil to put somewhere else and add fresh potting soil and black earth etc We often see gigantic Kale plants in other gardens here in North Burnaby . When we ask on the how, along out walks the gardener say they let them over winter. So we decided to do and try the same. In this very late spring I tried to crop all the bolting seed. But nothing else grew little 3-4 inch max leaves and still trying to bolt.. There is a mix of fresh mushroom and chicken manure in the soil. To make sure we have some I put two pots with densly planted kale and is growing OK. So what an I doing wrong with the over wintering they are close to the house in a North South side plot . Also I made special buckets for lettuces some for sunshine like the Italian red and the frisée and Roman. They are up from the ground on a palette. The Romane was still eaten by something on the opposite side I have a whole line of talk leaf Italian on the ground and nothing is touching it. I always put a lot of eggs shells for many years to discourage the free dinner slugs. Thank you kindly any opinions.
