What type of tree do we have here?

    The spikes on the balls don't feel super hard and pokey. They are kind of squishy. (Thats what she said)

    I also attached a picture of me and my fiancees first place... the reason I have so many questions for you guys/gals. Gotta learn how to look after all of this stuff.

    Could it be sweet gum? Just googled a tree with spikey green balls and that came up.

    Balls will turn hard and pokey later, particularly bad near a sandbox. Tree also has a poor, forking structure, and this is a kind that can be prone to breakage.

    Why is it bad near a sandbox? Just in case the balls fall on kids?

    A Liquidambar (Sweet gum) with maybe 35cm trunk just had a limb break today on my block. The Parks Board came out right away and cut it down. There are a few on my block - I can't say I remember that one.
