I got this plant as a gift, and unfortunately, it's dying because I don't know what kind of plant it is, so I don't know how much light and water it needs. Could someone please tell me what type of plant this is?

hh1136. From your pic it looks really healthy. What makes you think that it is dying?

Be patient. All being well, I think it will flower next spring. The big buds on the top look like very healthy flower buds.

that's a very nice looking and healthy rhodo you have. and you have some buds on it as well, so, should have flowers next spring.

small transplants take a couple years to get established and they usually don't bloom until they are. so, nothing out of the ordinary :)

rhodo's do best in eastern facings with morning sun and shade the rest of the day. they'll do okay in other facings as long as they're pretty well shaded - especially from the hot afternoon sun.
