This tree or shrub has large simple leaves with white hairs or indumentum on the undersides, and fuzzy stems and buds. Flowers are maybe 2cm across. At one of the lookouts at Waimea Canyon on Kauai.

Eriobotrya japonica. Someone has been spitting out their Loquat seeds at the viewpoint ;-)

Grown here also. See page 224 of Jacobson, Trees of Seattle - Second Edition (2006).

I guess so - it's not on a list I found of plants growing in that area.

I do have one photo of this species from a garden in Ireland, but I never would have been able to find that and associate it with this, and I don't see any fuzziness in that poor photo. I'm happy to see that Jacobson uses the descriptive term "fuzzy" as well.

    Thanks.

I'd guess the fuzz wears off in Ireland's wet and windy climate?
