Shrub or tree - next to it is another growing from a trunk cut back to the ground, that's about 8cm thick, so maybe it's a tree. It's very striking looking with the white bark and pale yellow-green leaves. I can't tell if this is its fall colours or if the leaves are this colour in the summer. This is in front of Seasons In the Park Restaurant at Queen Elizabeth Park.
Thanks saltcedar. THAT'S why the leaves looked familiar. And I guess this photo shows the "shelf-like projections mark[ing] the position of previous flowers and fruit" mentioned on the hort.uconn website. I saw somewhere a description that said "bark not remarkable". That's certainly not the case here. Surely I haven't been fooled by some sort of insecticidal paint, have I?
Here's a zoom of the first photo, in which you can see the trunk of one that was cut down. It's even more white.
