I'm about to dump this Roseary Vine out on some news paper, take away all the old dirt, trim it and repot. Any Idea's? barb

barb, it looks like there's probably some root rot happening. if the damage is extensive, i'd probably just do cuttings and root them rather than repotting severely damaged roots...you'd probably need to cut too much off for the plant to survive.

    good luck!!

on, in future, make sure the container has drainage and, if not, plant in a plastic container that does and insert that into the pretty ceramic piece.

Joclyn, It's been in this plastic hanging pot w/ drain holes for over 6 years. Hadn't really looked into the pot in ages. Promised some cuttings and took it down to do so and decided it REALLY needed something done. I think I will just dump it out and toss anything that looks damaged and start over. Thanks for your input. barb

oh! if it hasn't been repotted in that long, no wonder it's looking a bit scraggly!! needs fresh soil!!

since the container does have drainage, i'll bet you didn't find a bit of rot...just lots and lots of roots and very little soil.

repotting is generally needed at least every three years - if not to upsize the container at least to change out the soil. the soil becomes inert over time; even if you fertilize.

how'd the repot go?? new pics?? :)

    Joclyn,
This is the aftermath of the repot. I can't believe the amount of root structure I found. I did toss one bulb(?), corm(?), tuber(?) that looked a bit off. I replanted in a smaller pot witch will probably be a mistake since I have a couple of good sized tubers (?) left over. And this pot is not a hanging pot. Look at the residual on the towel. The towel is damp and I should be able to work with the residual more. ( I suppose this is why I have no "nice T-towels"). Since I spent most of today messing with this, I'll sleep on it and possibly redo the pot tomorrow. Lord what a mess!

Barb, you inspire me. I shall tackle my many and various repots which I have been slothfully postponing. ---Why is it that I can have a THOUSAND pots sitting around here and there (I've got them in the house, outside the house, in the garage, in the basement) but when I finally get ready to go at it...NONE of the pots seem to be the right size? I think it's like coat hangers, or plastic bags: the things multiply when I'm not looking. ---Another forehead-smacking moment occurs when the pot I remembered having but couldn't find REAPPEARS after I've put the plant in some other pot. ARRGH!
Best of botanical luck with the rosary vine!

lol about having a thousand pots and never can find one in the right size or right type (clay/plastic/orchid/etc)!! always seems to be the way of it, huh? ;)

barb, omg, i can relate to the frustration!! i repotted a ric rac yesterday...the neighbor left (we share a driveway) just when i was starting to put the pieces into the new pot (and they'd already come/gone during the time i was removing the peat from the roots) and came back almost 3 hours later and i was still there fiddling with the thing. he asked 'having fun yet?'

my answer? 'at this point, no!!' it was about 11:30 pm at that point...

anyhoo, if the corms/tubers are too big, split out what you have into two pots - the more room they have, the more vigorous the growth will be :)

I guess I'm going to have to go 'buy' a larger hanging pot, and put everything all in one. There are so few places in the house to put any kind of pot, and all of them are full.

Window sills about 4" wide and 5 cats that feel that the window sills are their place to police the outside world, monitor the birds ,and to keep those pesky squirrels in line. I only have cooking use of half the kitchen counter, because the other half is full of plants, pots, and current projects.

Boy, do I miss my East facing plant room at the last house... 6x18 ft, glass on N, E, & W sides and the center of the ceiling, potting bench and deep laundry type sink, shelves on all sides....pure heaven!!!! barb

oh, yeah, that room DOES sound like heaven!!!

you can buy hanging chains and use the current container and maybe one that is smaller and stack them one over the other, maybe.

if you have a big lots near you, they have very inexpensive hanging planters.

Yes, finding places to put plants is ongoing choreography! And then some plants GET BIGGER...which modifies the whole configuration. AND some plants gotta stay where they are due to light conditions...AARGH again!!! Plus these pesky family members just have to take up space with THEIR stuff too. Up to me, I'd get rid of this recliner chair, this inherited armchair, this ancient buffet---clear it all out and have plants ALL OVER this west-facing window. And people wonder why I heave heavy sighs now and then.
